* André Braunschweig était magistrat à la cours de
Paris
Here is what one of my
father's captive companions, André Braunschweig*, had to say about his
transformation from a healthy prisoner into a "Dienst Unfähig": "The stalag doctor who, out of
friendship, sent me to Ludwigsburg and the hospital doctor who, at his request,
took care of me, declared that I was a victim of acute colitis that caused me
to lose weight, anaemia and loss of all physical strength. The symptoms of such
a condition were taught to me and I stopped eating to present them. However,
this very painful fasting is not enough and my condition must deteriorate even
more! However, during the day I cannot walk in the hospital yard, because it is
June and the sun would give me a better physical appearance by transforming my
complexion than luckily I am quite pale by nature. So I never go out and to
spend my few remaining strengths, I chose to walk miles at night on the
hospital stairs. But I must at all costs avoid an untimely round and in the
event of a chance meeting give the impression that I am going to the toilet or
returning from it. "These night escapes were the daily routine of all fake
UDs trying to acquire the appearance of real patients. "What does this strange
ballet by these individuals mean, who in the middle of the night, cross paths
and meet again like ghosts on the hospital stairs? It is simply the intensive
preparation of the medical examination which will take place in a few days and
during which the D.U. will be recognized by the German doctor. ». André
Braunschweig after three failures was recognized as a D.U. "A few weeks
later, a health train collecting the D.U. of many stalags, most of them no
sicker than me, will bring me deliverance. Long live the French doctors”.
