D.U. (Dienst Unfähig): Les malades rapatriés - Rapatriated patients

Les D.U. étaient des prisonniers atteints d’affections qui les rendaient inaptes au travail et qui devaient être rapatriés dans leur pays d’origine. C’étaient des médecins de la nationalité du prisonnier qui présentaient ces malades à une commission constituée d’un médecin militaire Allemand du grade de Colonel. Au début de la guerre les D.U. étaient tous de vrais malades, mais connaissant la faculté française à manipuler les événements afin d’en tirer profit, très vite de nombreux faux malades, aidés par l'expertise complice des médecins Français, vinrent gonfler les rangs des D.U. et purent ainsi rentrer en France sans avoir aucune maladie.

Les médecins Français utilisèrent tous leurs talents pour fabriquer de faux malades, employant par exemple des examens de vrais malades pour les imputer à de faux tuberculeux ou de faux syphilitiques. Le principal critère pour les faux malades était de paraître réellement malade et les médecins s’employèrent à tout mettre en œuvre pour que les prisonniers désirant être classés D.U. aient l’air vraiment malade et surtout très amaigris, leur imposant un entrainement quotidien pour les faire maigrir et perdre leurs forces. Je me servirai dans un prochain article du récit d’un compagnon de captivité de mon père, André Braunschweig, qui fut reconnu D.U. après avoir tenté sa chance devant trois commissions avant d’être reconnu malade et qui retrouva la France en octobre 1943.

The D.U.s were prisoners with conditions that made them unfit for work and who had to be repatriated to their country of origin. It was doctors of the prisoner's nationality who presented these patients to a commission made up of a German military doctor of the rank of Colonel. At the beginning of the war the D.U. were all real patients, but knowing the French ability to manipulate events in order to take advantage of them, very quickly many fake patients, helped by the expertise of the French doctors, came to swell the ranks of the D.U. and thus could return to France without having any disease.

French doctors used all their talents to make fake patients, using, for example, tests of real patients to attribute them to fake tuberculosis or syphilis. The main criterion for the fake patients was to appear really sick and the doctors did their best to make the prisoners who wanted to be classified D.U. look really sick and especially very thin, imposing on them a daily training to make them lose weight and lose their strength. In a future article, I will use the account of a companion in captivity of my father, André Braunschweig, who was recognized as a D.U. after having tried his luck before three commissions before being recognized as sick and who returned to France in October 1943.
