Bissingen 1941: Les différentes activités du kommando - The different works in the kommando

Le travail à la ferme était entrecoupé par d'autres travaux, que ce soit terrassier mais aussi bûcheron. En janvier 1941 mon père et ses camarades travaillaient dans des fermes le matin et étaient bûcheron ou terrassier l'après-midi, avant de retourner travailler à la ferme en fin d'après-midi. Une particularité dans cette région, la forêt était nettoyée de ses feuilles après l'automne.
Les prisonniers entamaient la seconde année de leur détention et l'espoir était encore présent d'une libération prochaine, bien que le doute et l'incompréhension devenaient de plus en plus importants, du fait que la France avait signé un armistice avec l'Allemagne, que la collaboration était effective, et ça les prisonniers le voyaient dans les journaux qu'ils pouvaient lire où ils regardaient avec circonspection les photos de soldats Français travaillant au côté des Allemands, voire de soldats Français habillés avec la tenue allemande, alors que leurs gardiens leur disaient qu'ils étaient encore leurs ennemis et que c'est pour cela qu'ils étaient encore prisonniers. Ces interrogations alimentaient parfois leurs conversations, comme celle de savoir si le Maréchal Pétain œuvrait pour la France ou si au contraire il la desservait. Après avoir passé deux ans en kommando et un an en camp, mon père s'était rendu compte que le Maréchal Pétain avait des opinions défavorables en kommandos, alors que les prisonniers du camp de Ludwigsburg lui étaient plus majoritairement favorables.
Le travail bien que difficile et ingrat, permettait tout de même aux prisonniers de ne pas être constamment dans la pensée de leur liberté perdue, du pays si lointain et de la femme qui les attend, car ces manques psychiques et physiques furent les choses les plus cruelles qu'ils eurent à affronter, et pour certains, pour encore de nombreuses années.  

The work on the farm was interrupted by other work, whether it was terrassier or lumberjack. In January 1941 my father and his comrades worked on farms in the morning and were a lumberjack or terrassier in the afternoon, before returning to work on the farm in the late afternoon. A particularity in this region, the forest was cleaned of its leaves after the autumn.

The prisoners were entering the second year of their detention and there was still hope for a forthcoming release, although doubt and misunderstanding were becoming increasingly important, as France had signed an armistice with Germany, that collaboration was effective, and that the prisoners saw it in the newspapers that they could read where they looked carefully at pictures of French soldiers working alongside the Germans, or even of French soldiers dressed in German clothing, while their guards told them that they were still their enemies and that is why they were still prisoners. These questions sometimes fuelled their conversations, such as whether Marshal Pétain was working for France or whether he was serving it. After spending two years in kommando and one year in camp, my father realized that Marshal Pétain had unfavourable opinions in kommandos, while the prisoners in the Ludwigsburg camp were more in his favour.

The work, although difficult and thankless, allowed the prisoners not to be constantly in the thought of their lost freedom, of the country so far away and of the woman who awaits them, because these psychological and physical deficiencies were the most cruel things they had to face, and for some, for many more years to come.
