Ludwigsburg: Bombardement Anglais 15 avril 1943 - British bombing April 15, 1943

La nuit du 15 avril connu un raid aérien où une cinquantaine de bombes incendiaires arrosèrent le camp de Ludwigsburg, détruisant deux baraques : un commencement d’incendie de la baraque 6 et du magasin d’habillement furent rapidement circonscrits. Dans la baraque 5 une bombe traversa le toit et le premier étage de lits (chambre de 28 cordonniers face à celle des tailleurs), avant qu’elle n’explose, un courageux la jeta par la fenêtre, son geste lui valut sa libération. Il n’y eut pas de victimes, excepté un blessé. Par contre le kommando de Gaisburg à 10 km eut à déplorer la mort de 257 prisonniers Français et 143 Russes. « A 1h30 du matin les sirènes retentissent, depuis quelques temps déjà, les alertes ne sont plus des « alertes de harcèlement psychologique » et le matin quand nous arrivons dans les entreprises où nous sommes affectés, nous constatons les résultats (ruines fumantes). Les locataires des baraques 1 à 6 vont à l’abri n°1 dont l’entrée est proche, ceux des baraques 8 à 12 vont à l’abri n°2 qui a été réduit de moitié par une cloison en planches depuis l’arrivée des KG Russes, dont nous sommes séparés pour éviter tout contact. Un bruit plus violent nous fait sursauter et quand la DCA cesse de tirer les plus téméraires sortent de l’abri n°1. C’est l’horreur !........L’entrée de l’abri côtés Russes, en rondin et papier goudronné, est en flammes et, ne pouvant l’utiliser (pour sortir), les Russes poussent sur la cloison en bois qui s’effondre et vont s’agglutiner avec les Français au fond de l’abri. Le papier goudronné en feu produit un gaz toxique. En quelques instants 257 Français et 143 Russes périrent asphyxiés. Malgré tous nos efforts ce seront 400 cadavres que nous sortirons de cet abri ».

On the night of April 15, there was an air raid in which some 50 incendiary bombs sprayed the Ludwigsburg camp, destroying two barracks: a fire broke out in barrack 6 and the clothing store and were quickly contained. In hut 5 a bomb went through the roof and the first floor of beds (room of 28 shoemakers facing that of the tailors), before it exploded, a brave man threw it out the window, his gesture earned him his release. There were no casualties, except for one wounded. On the other hand, the Gaisburg kommando 10 km away had to deplore the deaths of 257 French prisoners and 143 Russians. "At 1:30 in the morning the sirens sound, for some time now, the alerts are no longer "psychological harassment alerts" and in the morning when we arrive in the companies where we are affected, we see the results (smoking ruins). The tenants of huts 1 to 6 go to shelter n°1 whose entrance is close, those of huts 8 to 12 go to shelter n°2 which has been halved by a wooden partition since the arrival of the Russian KG, from which we are separated to avoid any contact. A more violent noise makes us startle and when the DCA stops firing the most reckless ones come out of shelter n°1. The entrance to the shelter on the Russian sides, made of logs and tar paper, is in flames and, unable to use it (to get out), the Russians push on the wooden partition that collapsed and clung with the French at the bottom of the shelter. The tar paper on fire produces a toxic gas. In a few moments, 257 Frenchmen and 143 Russians died of asphyxiation. Despite all our efforts, 400 bodies will be taken out of this shelter”.
