Seul prisonnier Belge du kommando, le « petit Belge » comme il était surnommé par ses camarades Français, il donne des précisions sur ce bombardement: « Les Anglais prirent ce camp pour cible à cause d’un gardien Allemand qui tirait en direction des avions Anglais. Ceux-ci larguèrent leurs bombes sur ce mirador ce qui provoqua l’incendie du dernier compartiment de l’abri. Les 257 Français morts asphyxiés furent déposés sur le terrain de football, puis enterrés au cimetière de Vaïhingen, ainsi que 1800 Russes tués par les bombardements car n’ayant pas d’abris, leur camp avait été rasé par les bombes. Ironie du sort, seule était restée debout et arrêtée à deux heures moins le quart la pendule au milieu du camp ». Malgré le feu de l’abri Désiré Thiéffuy réussit à tirer dehors et à sauver 12 prisonniers inanimés intoxiqués par la fumée.
